Default Easy Outdoor Aviary

I was showing a friend these today and figured it would be a good thing to share. The first picture is what I would really call a poor man's aviary. It was made with leftover wood and siding from remodeling the house. GAW chicken wire was used but not before several scrubbings with vinegar and water and left in the elements for 2 months before I put a bird in it and even then, it's so small that only one bird could go in at a time.

Last Spring, I did another poor man's avairy but it's kicked up a notch or two. I ordered a dog kennel from petsmart for $200 w/free shipping. It's 4 x4 x 8 and powdercoated so it won't rust easy. I can fit all four parrots in at one time which is great. This year I'm either hanging something like a soccer goal netting or I have these smaller squares, think they came from one of the kids storage units/bookshelfs, that I will wire tie on because the squares on the kennel are a little too big for my Goffins, so I'm worried of someone getting out and I want to make sure a hawk can't attack from the sides.

It came with the canvas top but A, it had a gap that the birds could climb through if they snooped around enough, B, it looked tacky and cut out the light and C, I knew it'd last maybe one year before cracking so I got an ingenious idea...that my SO said wouldn't work. Show's how much he knows. The 48 inch manzanita perch I got for $12, the SS bowl sets were $3, at a petland that was going out of business. Someone gave me the jolly ball. The shorter 18 inch perches I got off ebay, a dozen for $1.00, $15 for shipping. Rope toys were dollar store item. The medium starbird climbing net was ebay for $60.00 Whatcha think? I think it looks maaaaaaahvelous!

Check out this netting Spoiler. It comes in huge sizes and is perfect for making any type of aviary.

The snow is here, silly. Those pics were taken last summer. I can't wait till it gets warmer cuz my flock is tired of being cooped up in the house.

Thanks for the link, John. That site seems to have a wide assortment of netting.

I have upgraded my fids to a real outdoor avairy. I hit the MAEBS Birdshow today and against my SO opinion, bought another avairy. It's this size http://www.windycityparrot.com/Merch...de=19181061001

and the color is sandstone. They were selling them for $995, I bought his only display (poor guy, it was only an hour into the show too, LOL) and talked him down to $850.00. Now I gotta buy nets and ropes and swings and toys and oh my, it's gonna cost a fortune to fill it. I can't waaaaaaait for Spring though!

I'll still use my kennel one for the Amazon and CAG as they can't fit through the spaced like the G2's can. I think I'll bust up the very first one or donate it to the local bird rescue.

I hope the fids are as excited as I am and man, I can't wait for it to warm up to get these crazy kids outdoors again!

I've threatened to put the kids in it when they're bad too! LOL

I'm debating whether to do half the roof with the plastic roofing as I did on the kennel. Was thinking it would not only give them a shady retreat spot but also dry should it start to rain cuz Lord knows Violet the CAG can't get wet or she'll jump to her death!

Just 2 months ago my neighbor cut down his beautiful magnolia tree. I came home almost at the end of him cutting up all the branches with a chainsaw and salvaged a nice feathered out tree branch. I think I will pot that in a bucket with concrete and that's a start to filling it up with goodies!

I finally got the aviary up and yes, I even carpeted it with outdoor carpeting, in case they fall.
